Artisan Story:
Mr. Abdel Nabi is a talented artisan whose life started in the Egyptian countryside. He moved to Cairo with his family and learned his trade at a young age. His talent with alabaster also extends to stone and marble. It is common for young people to learn a trade as an apprentice, or "saby" as they are called. Little by little he was able to purchase his own lathe and work independently. His workshop, although primitive my most standards, has expanded to include a special machine to cut boulders, which allows him to purchase marble from the quarry directly. Working for the tourist market is different than the export market, but his talent and good eye allowed him to make this transition smoothly. Not everyone has the ability to look at a picture, and then create it in stone or marble. This is the special gift that he brings to our work.
